the stakes are. there is a patchwork across the country ranging from two states, kentucky and virginia that are meles disenfranchise everybody with a criminal conviction. if you are convicted of a felony when you are 18 years old, you lose the right to vote for life in the states. you can apply for clemency and ask the governor to restore your rights, and give to go through all application procedure and its at his discretion. he decides to get to vote in his state. not surprisingly, under some governors, that number drops precipitously. other -- under others, it goes up. it is purely discretionary and entirely under the governor's control. and the result of hundreds of thousands of people are disenfranchised. there is a disproportionate impact on people of color. one in four black men are disenfranchised in virginia because of this law. we are working to try to change that, but they're still two states that disenfranchise everybody with a criminal conviction. 10 states permit alley disenfranchise some people -- florida, alabama, mississippi, ariz. -- there are prominent disenfranchisem

on the political ticker yet. talk about west virginia and the senate race there. this was the seat long held by the -- robert byrd who died earlier this year. freedom works, it's a conservative group, a grassroots organization that has provided a lot of the organization behind the tea party movement. i spoke to a couple of the people at freedom works today. they're going to get involved in the race and help with get out the vote efforts in west virginia. they think this is a seat they can grab back in the special election come november from the democrats. that's what i got. mark preston has a lot more. >> a lot of talk about the midterm elections. was the white house engaged in the elections, were they not? clearly the president and the vice president is this week. in fact, president obama is in philadelphia. he's raising money for democrats today. vice president biden is in ohio. on wednesday president obama goes to new york city for the u.n. general assembly but will also raise money for house and senate democrats. biden in massachusetts, maryland and florida over the next few days all rai

this area was founded in 1609 by sailors trying to get to virginia, and they settled here. i can tell you from 1609 to present day they know how to handle these tropical systems. they were well prepared, they were willing to accept the damage from the tree, the roof damage and the shattered windows, blocked roadways. it goes with the territory, so to speak. some of the flooding that we had along the coastline is caused by some of the nine to 12-foot waves that pushed by the wind you're going to have that. that's water is now since receded which is good news. there are other issues in terms of the main causeway in bermuda. that's shut. the airport is closed. when the winds subside, what they will do is take a team of engineers out by the causeway and check fort structural damage. if it appears sound, they will open it back up. and hopefully thereafter the airport. >> reynolds wolf doing yeoman's service in bermuda. >>> sarah shourd who spent more than a year in prison is back on u.s. soul but her heart is in iran. >> her fiance and friend are being held accused by the iranian government of
